Ingredients

  • 5 c. flour (all-purpose)
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 c. shortening
  • 3/4 c. warm water (only as warm as your hand can stand)

Method

  • Mix flour, salt, baking powder and shortening together.
  • Pour small amount of warm water into flour.
  • Knead flour together. Only add enough water to where the flour stays together and forms a ball.
  • Preheat wrought iron skillet or some form of baking utensil on top of the stove.
  • Make small, round balls; roll out with rolling pin into a circle.
  • Cook in wrought iron skillet at a medium to high flame.
  • Cook on both sides.
  • Flip tortillas with tongs or fork.
  • Serves 6 to 8 persons.
