Ingredients

  • 5 Tbsp. olive oil
  • 2 c. chopped onions
  • 2 c. chopped celery
  • 1 c. chopped green pepper
  • 1 lb. ground chuck
  • 1 lb. ground lean pork
  • 5 to 6 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 1/2 tsp. oregano
  • 1/2 tsp. sweet basil
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2 cans Italian stewed tomatoes
  • 1 (12 oz.) can tomato paste
  • 1 small can tomato sauce
  • 2 c. sliced mushrooms
  • dash of Tabasco
  • 1/2 c. Parmesan cheese
  • 1 pkg. spaghetti sauce seasoning
  • 1/4 c. brown sugar

Method

  • Heat oil and add onion, celery, green pepper and meat.
  • Cook until all meat changes color.
  • In a large Dutch oven, combine meat mixture and all remaining ingredients except Parmesan.
  • Simmer on low heat until liquid is almost gone and mixture is slightly thickened (about 30 minutes), stirring occasionally.
  • Add Parmesan cheese just before serving.
