Ingredients

  • 3 cup Flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 4 tbsp vegetable shortening
  • 1 1/4 cup warm water or warm milk
  • 4 cup vegtable oil( for frying)

Method

  • In large bowl blend flour, baking powder and salt
  • Add lard or shortening
  • Add warm milk or warm water and mix quickly until dough forms a mass
  • Turn dough onto floured surface ( counter top or cutting board)
  • knead the dough by folding it in half and pushing down a few times.
  • dough should not be to sticky.
  • Put the dough back in the bowl and cover bowl with( hand towel or plastic wrap) for about 10 to 15 min
  • divide dough in 1/2 keep other half covered so it doesn't dry.
  • Roll the dough on floured board to 1/8 in thick.
  • cut dough into rectangles to whatever size u like.
  • heat the vegetable oil to 400F in large skillet or deep fryer.
  • carefully put first sopapilla in hot oil.
  • once its puffed u can turn it around until golden brown.
  • place cooked sopapillas on a plate with a paper towel.
  • once they are all done enjoy with some honey :)
