Ingredients

  • 1-1/2 cup Sugar
  • 1/2 cups Shortening
  • 2 cups Flour
  • 2 Tablespoons Cocoa
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 ounce, fluid Water
  • 1 ounce, fluid Red Food Coloring
  • 1 cup Buttermilk
  • 2 whole Eggs
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla
  • 1 Tablespoon Vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon Soda

Method

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Premix water, food coloring and buttermilk. Set aside. Combine sugar, shortening, flour, cocoa and salt. Add milk mixture. Beat until well blended. Add eggs one at a time, beating mixture in between. Add vanilla. Beat for 1 minute.
  • Mix vinegar and baking soda together. Add to the batter and mix BY HAND (do not beat anymore).
  • Bake in two 9-inch round pans (that have been greased and floured) for 30 minutes.
