Ingredients

  • 1 box raisins
  • 1 c. nuts, chopped (optional)
  • 2 sticks margarine
  • 4 c. flour
  • 2 c. sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. cloves
  • 1 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. soda

Method

  • Mix raisins and 2 cups water in saucepan.
  • Bring to a boil and simmer while preparing cake.
  • Cool slightly.
  • Grease and flour tube pan or loaf pans or 9 x 13-inch pan.
  • Mix all dry ingredients.
  • Add softened margarine, 1 cup applesauce or water and raisin-water mixture.
  • Stir well by hand.
  • Pour into prepared pans.
  • Bake about 1 hour at 350°.
  • Cool 10 minutes before removing from pan.
  • Candied fruits may be added at Christmastime.
  • Delicious and it never fails.
  • I like to use chopped dates.
