Ingredients

  • 4 Tbsp. corn oil
  • 4 Tbsp. chopped onion
  • 2 c. raw Busmati rice, well rinsed
  • 1/4 tsp. ground turmeric
  • 1/2 tsp. salt or to taste
  • 2 whole cloves
  • 3 bay leaves
  • 3 1/4 c. water or more as needed

Method

  • Heat the oil in a pan and, over moderate heat, fry the onion for 2 minutes, or until turns golden.
  • Add the rice and stir well. Add the turmeric and salt and continue to fry the rice lightly for 2 minutes.
  • Add water, cloves and bay leaves; stir.
  • Bring to a boil and immediately turn the heat to low.
  • Cover the pan and cook for 15 minutes.
  • Stir once toward the end of that time.
