Ingredients

  • 6 tsp. butter
  • 6 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 3 (10 1/2 oz.) cans of condensed beef broth
  • 3 c. water
  • 1 tsp. sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 5 (1 inch) slices French or Italian bread
  • 3/4 lb. Swiss of Gruyer cheese, sliced thin

Method

  • In 4-quart pan over medium heat, melt butter; add onions; cook until tender and golden, stirring occasionally.
  • Stir in undiluted beef broth, water, sugar, Worcestershire and salt.
  • Over high heat, heat to boiling.
  • Reduce heat to low; cover and simmer 15 minutes. Preheat broiler, place bread on cookie sheet.
  • Toast both sides. Add cheese to bread and melt in broiler.
  • Put bread on top of bowl of soup.
