- 6 tsp. butter
- 6 large onions, thinly sliced
- 3 (10 1/2 oz.) cans of condensed beef broth
- 3 c. water
- 1 tsp. sugar
- 1/2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- 5 (1 inch) slices French or Italian bread
- 3/4 lb. Swiss of Gruyer cheese, sliced thin
Method
- In 4-quart pan over medium heat, melt butter; add onions; cook until tender and golden, stirring occasionally.
- Stir in undiluted beef broth, water, sugar, Worcestershire and salt.
- Over high heat, heat to boiling.
- Reduce heat to low; cover and simmer 15 minutes. Preheat broiler, place bread on cookie sheet.
- Toast both sides. Add cheese to bread and melt in broiler.
- Put bread on top of bowl of soup.
