Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. butter or margarine
  • 6 medium onions, sliced
  • 1 can cream of chicken soup
  • 1 c. milk
  • 3/4 lb. Swiss cheese, sliced or grated
  • French bread, sliced 1-inch thick
  • salt and pepper to taste

Method

  • Melt butter in pan; add onion slices.
  • Cook until tender, about 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Put onions in 9 x 13-inch baking dish. Combine soup, milk, salt and pepper.
  • Pour over onions and layer with cheese.
  • Arrange bread slices on top; brush with butter, if desired.
  • Bake at 350° for 30 minutes.
