Ingredients

  • 2 c. Softasilk flour
  • 1 1/4 c. sugar
  • 2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/3 c. soft shortening
  • 1 c. milk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 egg (1/4 c.)

Method

  • Heat oven to 350° (moderate).
  • Grease and flour two layer pans, 8 x 1 1/2-inches or a square pan, 8 x 8 x 1 3/4-inches. Measure flour by dip-level-pour method or by sifting.
  • Blend flour, sugar, baking powder and salt.
  • Add shortening, 2/3 of milk and vanilla.
  • Beat 2 minutes at medium speed on mixer or 300 vigorous strokes by hand.
  • Scrape sides and bottom of bowl constantly.
  • Add rest of milk and egg.
  • Beat 2 more minutes, scraping bowl frequently.
  • Pour into pan(s).
  • Bake layers about 30 minutes, square 30 to 35 minutes.
  • Cool.
  • Frost with your favorite icing.
