Ingredients

  • 1/4 c. shortening
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 c. boiling water
  • 1 c. canned or sweet milk
  • 1 yeast cake
  • 2 eggs
  • 7 1/2 c. plain flour

Method

  • Pour boiling water over shortening, sugar and salt.
  • Add milk; add yeast that has been dissolved in lukewarm water.
  • Add beaten eggs; stir in 4 cups flour.
  • Beat hard; add enough flour to a soft dough.
  • Place in an airtight container and grease top of dough. Cover with a damp cloth and keep in refrigerator until ready to use.
  • Roll dough to 1/4 inch thickness; cut into squares.
  • Drop in hot deep fat and fry until lightly brown.
  • Drain on paper towel; dust with powdered sugar.
  • Serve hot.
  • Dough is best when it is about a week old and does not have to be used all at once.
