Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 c. sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 3/4 tsp. soda
  • 1 tsp. ginger
  • 2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. cloves
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 c. butter or margarine, softened
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 c. dark molasses
  • 1 c. hot water

Method

  • Preheat oven to 350°.
  • Grease and flour a 9 x 13-inch pan. Cream together the butter and sugar.
  • Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each.
  • Add molasses; beat well.
  • Mix in flour alternately with hot water; blend well.
  • Add remaining ingredients; mix well.
  • Pour into pan.
  • Bake for 40 to 45 minutes.
