Ingredients

  • 8 c. flour
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1 tsp. anise seed
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 1/2 c. milk
  • 2 sticks melted butter
  • 1 pkg. yeast
  • 2 eggs

Method

  • Stir first 4 ingredients.
  • Mix together milk and butter. Make sure this mixture is good and warm but not too hot as to kill the yeast.
  • Add yeast.
  • Mix together.
  • Pour warmed liquid mixture into flour mixture.
  • Stir well and add eggs.
  • Mix together well. Knead together well (about 7 to 8 minutes).
  • Let mixture rise in bowl for 2 hours.
  • Roll out and cut into symmetrical strips. Place in greased pan.
  • Cover with a damp cloth for 30 minutes. Pat down to 1/2-inch high.
  • Bake at 250° until bottoms turn brown. Place under broiler to brown tops.
  • Watch closely as to not burn.
