Ingredients

  • 2 c. sugar
  • 2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/4 c. butter
  • 2 c. flour
  • 1 tsp. black pepper
  • 1/2 c. milk
  • 2 c. water
  • 1/4 tsp. nutmeg
  • 6 medium apples
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 3/4 c. shortening

Method

  • Combine sugar, water, cinnamon and nutmeg.
  • Bring to a boil. Add butter.
  • Peel and core apples.
  • Sift flour, salt and black pepper.
  • Cut in shortening.
  • Add milk all at once.
  • Mix just until flour is moistened.
  • Roll 1/4-inch thick.
  • Roll into squares. Place one apple in each square.
  • Fold.
  • Sprinkle generously with sugar and spices.
  • Dot with butter.
  • Place 1-inch apart in baking dish.
  • Pour mixture over apples.
  • Bake at 375° for 35 minutes. Serve hot with cream.
