Ingredients

  • 1/4 c. shortening
  • 3 c. flour
  • 1/4 c. sugar
  • 3 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 well beaten egg
  • 1 1/2 c. buttermilk
  • 1 1/2 c. raisins
  • 1 Tbsp. caraway seed

Method

  • Rub shortening into flour with sugar, baking powder, baking soda and a pinch of salt.
  • Add well beaten egg, buttermilk, raisins and caraway seed.
  • Knead on a floured board and bake in a round glass casserole dish with cross cut in top of dough.
  • Bake 1 hour at 375°.
  • Delicious served warm with butter and jams.
