Ingredients

  • 2 Packages dry yeast
  • 3/4 c. lowfat milk
  • 1/4 c. butter
  • 2 tbsp. sugar
  • 2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 1/2 - 5 c. flour (white or possibly whole wheat pastry)
  • 2 Large eggs
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tbsp. water
  • 1 tbsp. sesame or possibly poppy seed

Method

  • Soften yeast in 1/2 c. hot water.
  • Heat butter, lowfat milk, sugar and salt till sugar dissolves.
  • Cold to lukewarm.
  • Stir in 2 c. flour and beat well.
  • Add in yeast mix, 2 Large eggs and beat again.
  • Stir in sufficient flour to make a soft dough.
  • Knead 8-10 min.
  • Shape into ball.
  • Place in greased bowl, turn once, and cover.
  • Let rise, in a hot place, to double, approximately 1 1/4 hrs.
  • Punch down.
  • Divide into 3rds.
  • Cover, let rest 10 min.
  • Make 18 inch braids.
  • Let rise again to double, approximately 30 min.
  • Brush with egg yolk and 1 Tbsp.
  • water.
  • Sprinkle with sesame or possibly poppy seeds and bake at 375 in a preheated oven for 45-50 min.
