Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 c. warm water
  • 2 Tbsp. shortening
  • 2 Tbsp. sugar
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. granulated garlic
  • 2 2/3 c. flour
  • melted butter

Method

  • Dissolve yeast in water in a large mixing bowl.
  • Add shortening, sugar, salt, garlic and 2 cups of the flour.
  • Beat 1 minute on low speed, scraping bowl constantly.
  • Beat 2 minutes at medium speed, scraping bowl occasionally.
  • Stir in remaining flour until smooth.
  • Cover; let rise in warm place until double, about 45 minutes to 1 hour.
  • Stir down by beating 25 strokes by hand. Spread evenly in a greased loaf pan.
  • Pat with a floured hand to smooth the top.
  • Let rise until doubled, about 40 minutes. Preheat oven to 375°.
  • Bake 45 minutes, or until loaf sounds hollow when tapped.
  • Brush top with melted butter; remove from pan and cool on a wire rack.
  • Makes 1 loaf.
