Ingredients

  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 2 1/2 c. flour
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 2 c. brown sugar
  • 3/4 c. shortening
  • 1/2 tsp. soda
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp. cloves
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 c. walnuts

Method

  • Mix the flour, salt, sugar and shortening until crumbly.
  • Save half the mixture for topping.
  • To remaining batter, add baking powder, soda and spices.
  • Mix thoroughly and add milk and eggs. Pour into two 8-inch pans.
  • Sprinkle with remaining crumbs and add fruit of choice.
  • May use preserves.
  • Bake at 375° for 25 to 30 minutes.
