Ingredients

  • 1 stick butter (1/2 c.)
  • 1/3 c. shortening
  • 1 3/4 c. sugar
  • 1/2 c. sliced, fresh strawberries or drained, chopped frozen strawberries
  • 1 (6 oz.) pkg. strawberry-flavored gelatin
  • 2 2/3 c. all-purpose flour
  • 3 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 1/3 c. milk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 4 egg whites

Method

  • Cream the butter, shortening and sugar until fluffy.
  • Add strawberries and gelatin; beat well.
  • Combine dry ingredients and add alternately with milk.
  • Add vanilla; beat well.
  • Fold in egg whites.
  • Turn into 3 lightly greased and floured 8-inch cake pans. Bake at 350° for 30 to 35 minutes.
  • Frost with strawberry frosting.
  • Yields three 8-inch layers.
