Ingredients

  • 3/4 lb. dates, cut into pieces
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1/2 c. water
  • 2 Tbsp. lemon juice
  • 1/8 tsp. salt
  • chopped pecans (optional)
  • 1 1/2 c. sifted flour
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/8 tsp. salt
  • 1 c. brown sugar, packed
  • 1 1/2 c. rolled oats
  • 3/4 c. butter or margarine, melted

Method

  • Mix and sift flour, baking soda and salt; add brown sugar and rolled oats and mix well.
  • Cut butter into flour mixture until well blended.
  • Press one half of butter mixture on sides and bottom of greased 9-inch square pan.
  • Cover with date mixture and sprinkle remaining butter mixture on top.
  • Bake in preheated 350° oven about 30 minutes.
  • When cool, cut into squares and remove from pan.
  • Yields 25 squares.
