Ingredients

  • 2 cakes compressed yeast
  • 1/4 c lukewarm water
  • 1 1/2 C scalded milk
  • 1/4 c shortening
  • 1/2 c sugar
  • 2 t salt
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 5-6 C sifted all purpose flour
  • Sugar
  • Cinnamon
  • Chopped nuts

Method

  • 1. Soften yeast in lukewarm water.
  • 2. To scalded milk add shortening, sugar, salt. Stir until melted. Cool slightly.
  • 3. Beat eggs in large bowl. Add milk mixture and softened yeast. Mix with electric mixer.
  • 4. Add 2 1/2 c flour, beat until smooth. Add enough flour to make soft dough. Cover and let rise 10 minutes.
  • 5. Turn out on floured board and knead until smooth and satiny. Add flour as needed. Place dough in greased bowl, brush with oil. Cover and let rise in warm place until double in bulk, about 1 hour. Punch down and let rise again.
  • 6. Put about 1 c. sugar, nuts and 2 T cinnamon in small bowl. Melt 1/2 c butter in small pan.
  • 7. Roll small amount of dough on floured board. Cut into strips. Dip in melted butter then in sugar mixture. Roll up and place on buttered pan.
  • 8. Let rise 45 minutes. Bake in 375 degree oven until nicely brown, about 30 minutes.
