Ingredients

  • 12 slices thin sliced bread
  • butter as needed
  • 1 lb. fresh pork sausage of bacon
  • 1/2 lb. grated sharp Cheddar cheese (I use a little more)
  • 4 eggs
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 3 c. milk

Method

  • Trim crusts and lightly butter bread.
  • Brown sausage.
  • Place 6 slices of bread in a 9 x 13-inch greased (spray with Pam) baking dish, buttered side up.
  • Spread 1/2 crumbled, drained sausage or bacon and cheese over bread.
  • Place 6 slices of bread on top, followed by rest of sausage and cheese.
  • Lightly beat together eggs, milk and salt.
  • Pour over casserole.
  • Press down with spatula until milk comes through.
  • Cover and refrigerate overnight.
  • Bake for 40 minutes in preheated 350° oven.
  • Can add mushrooms.
