Ingredients

  • 1/2 c butter
  • 1/2 c shortening
  • 2 c sugar
  • 5 egg yolks
  • 2 c sifted plain flour
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 c butter milk
  • 1 tsp walnut flavoring
  • 1 7 oz can flaked coconut
  • 1 c black walnuts
  • 5 beaten egg whites

Method

  • Cream sugar, butter, shortening, and egg yolks.
  • Beat until smooth. combine dry ingredients.
  • Add to creamed mixture.
  • Add buttermilk and flavoring mix well.
  • Add coconut and nuts. mix well. Gently fold in beaten egg whites with a wooden spoon.
  • Grease and flour three 9 inch cake pans.
  • Pour batter in.
  • Bake at 325° for 20 to 25 minutes.
  • Let Cool.
