Ingredients

  • 1 (29 oz.) can pear halves
  • 1 1/2 lb. ground beef
  • 1/4 c. fine bread crumbs
  • 1/3 c. minced onion
  • 3 Tbsp. minced parsley
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 c. milk
  • 1 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp. pepper
  • 1/4 tsp. ground allspice
  • 2 Tbsp. oil
  • 1/4 c. cider vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp. brown sugar
  • 1 tsp. pickling spice
  • 1 tsp. whole cloves
  • 1/3 c. dried apricots (optional)

Method

  • Drain pears, reserving syrup.
  • Combine ground beef, bread crumbs, onion, parsley, egg, milk, salt, pepper and allspice.
  • Mix well and shape into 1 1/2-inch balls.
  • Brown meat balls slowly in oil.
  • Add reserved pear syrup, vinegar, brown sugar, pickling spice, cloves and dried apricots (if you have them).
  • Cover and simmer 15 minutes.
  • Add pear halves and simmer 15 minutes longer. Makes 4 to 6 servings.
