Ingredients

  • 6 or 8 red Delicious apples
  • 3 c. sugar
  • 1 1/2 c. water
  • 1 stick oleo
  • puff pastry
  • 1 c. glaze (apricot, strawberry, peach or blackberry)

Method

  • Peel, core and halve the apples.
  • Place apples in a bowl and toss with lemon juice.
  • Pour sugar into heavy large cast iron skillet.
  • Add water to cover.
  • Cook sugar and water until it turns blonde in color.
  • Add oleo.
  • Sugar will crystallize.
  • Remove from heat; add apples, standing on end around skillet.
  • Bake 30 minutes at 400°.
  • Remove from heat; place sheet of puff pastry over top. Trim.
  • Bake 30 minutes more.
  • Remove and cool 15 minutes.
  • Place plate over pie and invert onto plate.
  • Glaze with flavor of choice.
