- 1/2 c. shortening
- 1 c. sugar
- 3 eggs
- 1 c. apple butter
- 2 1/2 c. flour
- 3 tsp. baking powder
- 1/2 tsp. soda
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp. nutmeg
- 1 c. sour milk
- 1/2 c. apple butter
Method
- Cream shortening and sugar.
- Beat in eggs one at a time.
- Beat until light and fluffy.
- Stir in 1 cup apple butter.
- Sift together dry ingredients.
- Add dry ingredients to creamed mixture alternately with sour milk.
- (To make sour milk, measure 1 tablespoon lemon juice into measuring cup; add milk to make 1 cup and stir.)
- Turn into 2 greased and floured 9-inch cake pans or one 9 x 13-inch pan.
- Bake at 350° for 30 to 35 minutes.
- Cool. Spread bottom layer of cooled cake with 1/4 cup apple butter.
- Top with fluffy frosting.
- Cover top cake layer.
- Frost sides and top. Swirl apple butter onto frosted top to give marbled effect.
