Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 c. apple butter
  • 2 1/2 c. flour
  • 3 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1 c. sour milk
  • 1/2 c. apple butter

Method

  • Cream shortening and sugar.
  • Beat in eggs one at a time.
  • Beat until light and fluffy.
  • Stir in 1 cup apple butter.
  • Sift together dry ingredients.
  • Add dry ingredients to creamed mixture alternately with sour milk.
  • (To make sour milk, measure 1 tablespoon lemon juice into measuring cup; add milk to make 1 cup and stir.)
  • Turn into 2 greased and floured 9-inch cake pans or one 9 x 13-inch pan.
  • Bake at 350° for 30 to 35 minutes.
  • Cool. Spread bottom layer of cooled cake with 1/4 cup apple butter.
  • Top with fluffy frosting.
  • Cover top cake layer.
  • Frost sides and top. Swirl apple butter onto frosted top to give marbled effect.
