- 1 qt. beef broth (bouillon okay)
- 2 lb. ground beef
- 1/2 c. chopped onion
- 4 Tbsp. chili powder
- 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
- 1 tsp. ground cumin
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/4 tsp. ground allspice
- 1/4 tsp. ground cloves
- 1/16 tsp. ground red pepper
- 1 bay leaf
- 15 oz. can tomato sauce
- 2 Tbsp. vinegar
- 1/2 oz. (1/2 sq.) unsweetened chocolate
- tomato paste to thicken
- 1 to 2 cans kidney beans, drained (if desired)
Method
- Boil beef broth in 4-quart pot.
- Slowly add beef and separate into small pieces.
- Cover and simmer for 30 minutes.
- Add everything else except tomato paste and beans.
- Cover and simmer for 1 hour, stirring occasionally.
- Thicken with tomato paste as needed.
- Add beans if desired.
- Refrigerate overnight.
- Serves 6.
