Ingredients

  • 4 c. sliced carrots
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 c. water
  • 2 Tbsp. flour
  • 2 Tbsp. butter, melted
  • 1 c. milk
  • 1 c. American cheese, diced
  • 1 can French-fried onions

Method

  • Cook carrots in salted water; drain.
  • Stir flour into butter. Add milk gradually; cook until sauce thickens, stirring constantly. Add cheese; stir until melted.
  • Place 1/3 of the carrots in 1 1/2-quart casserole.
  • Cover with 1/3 of the onions.
  • Repeat with layers of carrots and onions, reserving 1/3 of the onions for top. Pour cheese sauce over all.
  • Bake for 15 minutes at 350°.
  • Sprinkle with remaining onions.
  • Bake for 5 minutes more.
