Ingredients

  • 1 compressed yeast cake
  • 1/4 c. lukewarm water
  • 1 tsp. sugar
  • 1/3 c. sugar
  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1 egg, slightly beaten
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 c. warm water
  • 4 c. all-purpose flour

Method

  • Dissolve yeast in 1/4 cup water and then add 1 teaspoon sugar. In a 3-quart bowl, add 1/3 cup sugar, shortening, egg, salt and 1 cup warm water.
  • Beat thoroughly and add dissolved yeast. Gradually beat flour into mixture.
  • Mix and knead with hands until dough becomes stiff to beat.
  • Place covered in a warm place and let rise until double in size, about 2 1/2 to 3 hours.
  • Press down and place in refrigerator.
  • On the day you wish to bake, roll and shape as many rolls as desired.
  • Do this in early afternoon and allow rolls to stand in cool place.
  • Bake in a 400° oven for 20 to 25 minutes.
