Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. dry yeast
  • 1/4 c. warm water
  • 2 c. milk, scalded
  • 2 Tbsp. sugar
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 1 Tbsp. shortening
  • 5 to 6 c. sifted flour

Method

  • Soften yeast in warm water.
  • Combine hot milk, sugar, salt and shortening in a large mixing bowl.
  • Cool to lukewarm.
  • Stir in 2 cups of flour.
  • Mix well.
  • Add yeast mixture.
  • Mix well.
  • Add enough of the remaining flour to make a moderately stiff dough. Turn out on floured surface and knead until smooth (about 10 minutes).
  • Shape in a ball.
  • Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease surface of dough.
  • Cover with a towel and let rise in a warm place until double in size (about 1 1/4 hours).
  • Punch down. Shape into desired dinner rolls or make 2 loaves.
