Ingredients

  • 1 (46 oz.) can tomato juice (Campbell's or Heinz)
  • 3/4 lb. bacon (3/4-inch slices)
  • 2 medium onions, chopped
  • 1 tsp. cayenne pepper
  • 3 Tbsp. brown sugar
  • 1 lb. okra (fresh or frozen, 1/2-inch slices)

Method

  • Cook bacon in Dutch oven until about done.
  • Add chopped onion. Cook until transparent.
  • Add tomato juice.
  • Cook to a slow boil. Add cayenne pepper and stir well.
  • Add okra.
  • Simmer 45 minutes, stirring occasionally from bottom.
  • Add brown sugar and simmer 5 minutes.
  • Skim off excess grease.
  • Freezes well.
