Ingredients

  • 1 c. white sugar
  • 1 c. brown sugar
  • 2 c. buttermilk
  • 1 c. shortening or margarine
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tsp. soda
  • 1 lb. dates, cut up
  • 1 c. chopped nuts
  • 5 c. flour

Method

  • Cream shortening and sugar.
  • Add eggs.
  • Sift dry ingredients and add alternately with buttermilk.
  • Add vanilla, dates and nuts. Grease and flour pans.
  • Use 13 x 9-inch pan and an 8 x 8-inch. Bake in moderate oven about 35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  • When cold, cut into squares and roll in powdered sugar.
