Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. sweet chocolate
  • 1/2 c. boiling water
  • 1 c. Crisco
  • 2 c. sugar
  • 4 egg yolks (unbeaten)
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 2 1/2 c. sifted plain flour
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 4 egg whites

Method

  • Melt chocolate in boiling water.
  • Cool.
  • Cream butter and sugar.
  • Add egg yolks one at a time, beating after each.
  • Add vanilla to chocolate mix.
  • Add chocolate mixture to batter.
  • Sift together salt, soda and flour.
  • Add with buttermilk to chocolate batter, beating well until smooth.
  • Beat egg whites until peak forms.
  • Fold into batter.
  • Pour into three 8 or 9-inch pans, well-greased and lined with wax paper.
  • Bake at 350° for 30 to 40 minutes.
  • Cool.
  • Frost with Coconut-Pecan Frosting.
