Ingredients

  • 5 1/2 to 6 c. flour
  • 2 pkg. Fleischmann's active dry yeast
  • 1 Tbsp. sugar
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 2 c. milk
  • 1/2 c. water
  • cornmeal (measure flour by spooning lightly into cup)

Method

  • Combine 3 cups of flour, yeast, sugar, salt and soda.
  • Heat liquids until warm (120° to 130°).
  • Add to dry ingredients; beat well.
  • Stir in enough more flour to make a stiff batter.
  • Spoon into 2 loaf pans that have been greased and sprinkled with corn meal.
  • Cover; let stand in warm place for 1 hour.
  • Sprinkle with cornmeal and bake, uncovered, at 400° for 25 minutes.
  • Remove immediately from pans and cool.
  • To serve, slice and toast. Yields 16 slices per loaf.
