Ingredients

  • 1 c. dates, cut in small pieces
  • 1/2 c. water
  • 2 1/2 c. sifted flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp. soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. cloves
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 3/4 c. shortening
  • 3/4 c. sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2/3 c. buttermilk or sour milk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1/2 c. chopped nuts

Method

  • Cook dates in water over low heat, stirring occasionally, until smooth and thick.
  • Cool.
  • Sift dry ingredients together. Cream shortening and sugar.
  • Add unbeaten eggs.
  • Stir in date mixture.
  • Combine milk and vanilla.
  • Add alternately with dry ingredients to creamed mixture (slow speed on mixer).
  • Stir in nuts.
