Ingredients

  • 1/4 c. brown sugar
  • 1/2 c. water
  • 1 1/2 c. flour
  • 1 c. brown sugar
  • 3/4 c. butter
  • 8 oz. pkg. pitted date halves
  • 1/2 tsp. water
  • 1 c. oats
  • 1/2 c. nuts

Method

  • Grease a 13 x 9-inch pan.
  • In a medium pan, combine 1/4 cup brown sugar, dates and water.
  • Bring to a boil.
  • Reduce heat and simmer 5 minutes or until thick.
  • Remove from heat.
  • Stir in vanilla.
  • Spoon flour into cup, level off.
  • In a large bowl, combine flour, oats, 1 cup brown sugar, nuts and salt.
  • Use fork and blend in butter until mixture is coarse crumbs.
  • Reserve 2 cups of crumb mixture for topping.
  • Press crumb mixture firmly in bottom of greased pan.
  • Spread evenly with date mixture.
  • Sprinkle with remaining crumbs.
  • Pat lightly.
  • Bake at 350° until golden brown.
