Ingredients

  • 5 Tbsp. olive oil
  • 2 large onions
  • 4 cloves garlic
  • 1 1/2 lb. ground beef
  • 3 c. tomato sauce
  • 1 c. water
  • 3/4 tsp. celery seed
  • 1/4 tsp. cayenne
  • 1 1/2 tsp. ground cumin seed
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 3 Tbsp. chili powder
  • 3 tsp. salt
  • 2 (16 oz.) cans kidney beans

Method

  • Heat oil in skillet.
  • Add onion and garlic.
  • Saute until golden.
  • Add meat and brown.
  • Transfer the meat mixture to a large saucepan and add remaining ingredients (except beans).
  • Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, until sauce is thick as desired (about 4 hours).
  • Add 2 cans kidney beans before serving. Cook them for 2 hours in the simmering sauce.
