Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. butter
  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 3 eggs, beaten
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. baking soda
  • 2 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 2 c. sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder

Method

  • Preheat oven to 350°.
  • Cream butter.
  • Add sugar gradually; cream well.
  • Add eggs and stir.
  • Sift together flour, salt, baking powder, soda and nutmeg.
  • Add to sugar/butter mixture, alternate with buttermilk and mix well.
  • Pour batter into two 9-inch layer pans.
  • Sprinkle tops of cake batter with sugar and nutmeg.
  • Bake 35 minutes or until done at 350°.
  • No frosting necessary.
  • The sugar and nutmeg make a sweet topping.
