Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 c. flour
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 Tbsp. baking powder
  • 5 to 6 Tbsp. butter, margarine or Crisco shortening
  • 3/4 c. buttermilk

Method

  • Preheat oven to 400°.
  • Combine flour with salt and baking powder.
  • Use 2 knives or a pastry blender to cut in butter or substitute.
  • No piece of shortening should be larger than a pea. Add buttermilk and stir the mixture until it holds together. Briefly knead on lightly floured surface.
  • Roll to 1/2-inch thickness and cut into 2-inch rounds.
  • Place in ungreased 9-inch baking pan and bake at 400° about 12 to 15 minutes, or until the biscuits are nicely browned.
  • Serve immediately.
  • Makes about 1 dozen.
