Ingredients

  • 2 3/4 cups cake flour sifted
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/2 cup vegetable shortening soft
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup walnuts chopped
  • 1 1/2 cups applesauce
  • 1 each eggs
  • 3 cups powdered sugar sifted
  • 13 cup vegetable shortening
  • 3 teaspoons milk
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Method

  • Grease and flour 13x9 inch pan.
  • Sift together flour, sugar, baking powder, soda, salt, cinnamon, cloves, and allspice.
  • Add shortening, water, and nuts.
  • Beat 2 minutes, and add applesauce and egg.
  • Beat 2 more minutes.
  • Pour into prepared pan.
  • Bake in 350F (180C).
  • oven for 45 to 50 minutes.
  • Frost with White Butter Frosting when cool.
  • For the frosting, mix all ingredients together until smooth.
