Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. yeast
  • 1/4 c. warm water
  • 5 c. flour
  • 1/3 c. sugar
  • 3 tsp. baking powder
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 c. shortening
  • 1 1/2 c. buttermilk

Method

  • In a small bowl, soften yeast in warm water; set aside.
  • In a large mixing bowl, stir together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and baking soda.
  • With a pastry cutter, cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs; mix well.
  • Add yeast mixture and buttermilk; stir until combined.
  • On a floured surface knead mixture about 2 minutes or until smooth, adding more flour as needed.
  • (To make ahead, the dough may be stored, covered, in refrigerator overnight.)
