Ingredients
- 1 pkg. yeast
- 1/4 c. warm water
- 5 c. flour
- 1/3 c. sugar
- 3 tsp. baking powder
- 2 tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 1 c. shortening
- 1 1/2 c. buttermilk
Method
- In a small bowl, soften yeast in warm water; set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, stir together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and baking soda.
- With a pastry cutter, cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs; mix well.
- Add yeast mixture and buttermilk; stir until combined.
- On a floured surface knead mixture about 2 minutes or until smooth, adding more flour as needed.
- (To make ahead, the dough may be stored, covered, in refrigerator overnight.)
