Ingredients

  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 c. buttermilk
  • 1 c. butter or margarine
  • 2 c. sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 3 1/2 c. flour
  • 2 c. nuts, chopped (optional)
  • 1 lb. orange slice candy
  • 1 lb. sliced dates
  • 1 can coconut (optional)

Method

  • Dissolve baking soda in the buttermilk.
  • Cream butter; add sugar and then eggs.
  • Alternately add 1/2 the flour-salt mixture with the buttermilk.
  • Roll the nuts, candy and dates in the remaining flour.
  • Add these to the batter with the coconut.
  • Bake in a greased tube pan for 2 1/2 hours at 250°.
