Ingredients
- 1 1/4 lb. baking potatoes, thinly sliced and divided
- 4 oz. Cheddar cheese, grated (about 1 c.), divided
- 2 small onions, thinly sliced, divided
- 2 Tbsp. butter or margarine, divided
- 2 Tbsp. flour, divided
- 1 tsp. salt, divided
- 1/2 tsp. dried thyme, divided
- 1/4 tsp. pepper, divided
- 1 c. milk
Method
- Preheat oven to 375°.
- Butter a 2-quart baking dish.
- Layer half the potatoes, 1/3 the cheese, half of the onions, 1 tablespoon butter, 1 tablespoon flour, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon pepper;
- repeat layering with 1/3 potatoes, 1/3 cheese and remaining onions, butter, flour, salt, thyme and pepper. Place remaining potatoes on top.
- Pour milk over.
- Sprinkle with remaining cheese.
- Cover and bake 45 minutes.
- Uncover and bake until potatoes are tender and liquid is almost absorbed, 20 minutes.
- Heat broiler.
- Broil until golden, 1 to 2 minutes. (Bake 1 hour and 7 minutes; ready to serve in 1 hour and 22 minutes.)
