Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. granulated sugar
  • 1/2 c. brown sugar
  • 1 c. shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 c. sifted flour
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. cream of tartar

Method

  • Cream sugars, shortening and egg.
  • Add vanilla; blend well. Add sifted flour and other dry ingredients.
  • Form into balls the size of walnuts.
  • Dip top half into water, then into some granulated sugar.
  • Place on ungreased baking sheet.
  • Press down into the center of each with a finger.
  • Decorate center with a walnut half or a candied cherry, if desired.
  • Bake at 425° for 8 to 10 minutes.
